Skinspirational Series: Jay

Our skinspirational series highlights a few of our favorite skincare enthusiasts in the Skinspo community. They’ve shared skincare routines that work for them – and here, we go behind the routine and chronicle their skincare journey. Here we chat with Jay from IG @skincarebyjay, who shares about how skincare became a personal inspiration.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

A: I’m Jay; I’m 29 and from Adelaide, Australia! I am a Le Cordon Bleu graduated patissier with a passion for K-beauty, skincare, and ingredients. I have a combination/sensitive skin type that becomes overly oily and irritated from my work in commercial kitchens. Because of that, it’s important for me to hydrate and protect my skin.

For me, skincare is what I always look forward to. It’s my time to do self-care. There is something so soothing to the mind and body about taking that time for yourself.

Q: What got you started on your skincare journey?

When I look back to my school and college years, my skin wasn’t ever that bad. My skin was overly oily and from that I had consistent breakouts. I had cleanser and moisturizer to treat breakouts but was reluctant to use it.  I think my biggest issue was sunscreen! I’m very fair skinned and I burnt really badly. The worst was that Australian sunscreens felt horrible and made me breakout more, so I did without it.

In my early 20s I moved to Sydney, and things started to change for me. It was a whole new world for me where people really cared about self-image and expressing themselves. I remember wanting to start doing something for my skin so I bought skincare trial packs every month. However, it took a lot of trial and error until found something I liked. A few years after starting skincare, I still wasn’t able to find something that worked for me.

Luckily though, this was the time K-beauty was starting to become mainstream. With its focus on natural ingredients and balancing the skin I made my first order from Innisfree. I was obsessed! My skin was clear and had never looked better! People began to ask me about my skin transformation. Since then, skincare has gone from a struggle to a passion for me. Now, I’m almost in my 30’s I am still excited by ever evolving K-beauty products. They can be so effective and yet so inexpensive!

Q: What’s your HG (holy grail) product?

Strangely enough, the product that has made the biggest impact in my life is sunscreen. The first time I used Innisfree sunscreen it was a complete lightbulb moment. I realized this was how sun protection was supposed to be. We all know how important sunscreen is, but I know a lot of people, like my younger self, who don’t wear it because of its oily feeling and tendency to cause breakouts.

It is so important to find a sunscreen you want to use! The best ones in my opinion are Korean; you really can’t go wrong.

I will always love Innisfree Triple Care Suncream but lately I am using Missha Soft Finish Sun Milk. It goes on like a milky essence but changes to a powder finish, so impressive!

Q: Who is your skinspiration?

A: Charlotte Cho of Soko Glam! She was one of the first people to introduce K-beauty into the west and one of the first people I watched on YouTube while researching. Her passion and knowledge is inspiring. She is an example that if you have passion for anything, you can make something special out of it.

In addition, the Korean beauty industry inspires me too. It’s exciting and ever changing. New trends like the skin-care diet, ingredients like Centella asiatica, and red algae are constantly being introduced. It’s a great time to be a K-beauty enthusiast.
